Essen Christmas market is the most sustainable in Europe

Great news from the Rhineland: the Christmas market in Essen has been recognised by the online travel portal „European Best Destinations“ as the most sustainable in Europe explained.

The International Christmas Market Essen is one of the most famous and largest Christmas markets in Germany. It extends over several squares in Essen's city centre and offers a special mix of internationality, medieval and modern. The stalls provide visitors with handmade products, arts and crafts, jewellery and culinary specialities - from hot chestnuts and waffles to international street food. This year, the new Christmas pyramid, which tells the Christmas story over four storeys, is enthroned above the mulled wine stand on the newly designed Willy-Brandt-Platz. Right next door is the Venetian carousel, which is sure to make children's hearts beat faster. The unique lighting once again creates a particularly festive atmosphere this year: the Christmas market and the neighbouring streets shine in all their glory, this year with illuminated animals from all continents of the world and the popular teddy bear and Christmas letterbox.

What makes the Essen Christmas market so sustainable?

The reason for the „Best Sustainable Christmas Market in Europe“ award is the various measures that the Christmas market operators have implemented in recent years to conserve resources and avoid environmental pollution: For example, the Essen Christmas Market has been supplied exclusively with green electricity from its partner E.ON. for years. In addition, all caterers on site do not use disposable crockery. Instead, reusable crockery is available for a deposit. Finger food such as chips and churros are served in paper bags. The organiser also attaches great importance to regional, fair trade and organic products as well as a good environmental footprint when selecting vendors.
