To launch our news blog, we asked for your favourite, most exciting and greatest stories that you have experienced in a youth hostel so far. We would like to say „thank you“ to all participants for the special memories you have shared with us. And because joy shared is joy doubled, we would like to publish some of the best stories here.

These are the most beautiful stories...
A particularly friendly welcome, warm support during the stay - many participants have fond memories of the first-class treatment they received in the youth hostels. A big compliment therefore goes to all the staff in the youth hostels in Germany and the team leaders of our programme partners. Other submissions report on the eventful programmes. There were covered wagon rides and an Easter egg hunt in the snow, cosy snuggle corners, mother-daughter programmes and riding holidays with night watchman tours. There were also one or two surprises among the entries, such as the reunion of two families who already knew each other from other youth hostels. But take a look for yourself!

„Unfortunately, I only arrived at around 8pm because the train was late and was asked if I was hungry. Then I got fried potatoes and fried eggs at this time of night.“

„Our special experience was a few years ago. The kids were still small. But we still talk about it today. We were at the JH Montabaur. We had booked the Easter programme there. A great programme was waiting for us. A campfire with baking bread on a stick, making Easter baskets. But what we remember most of all is the covered wagon ride with the Schnitzl hunt. We did this in the snow. It was cold and we had to walk back through the snow. You don't look for Easter eggs in the snow every year.“

„We had a special youth hostel experience in the summer of 2021 when we received a confirmation at Ratingen Youth Hostel after a spontaneous holiday enquiry due to coronavirus. After our arrival, we realised that we were the only family for the week. Surprisingly, we had a dining room to ourselves - and on top of that, the food was brought directly to our table in a food trolley. What a service! That was an extraordinary side effect of this holiday, which also offered other wonderful experiences around Ratingen.“

„She even dared to explore the youth hostel with her new acquaintance, who was just as shy as she was, with its corridors and floors on her own at the age of 5. The care she received from the staff was unique. [...] Then the programme was really lovingly and brightly designed, with a cosy corner and bedtime story in the evening, so it really was a wonderful adventure for both of us... so much excitement and wonderful encounters... we immediately booked further stays in different youth hostels over the next few years....“

„It's just great to holiday in the spacious rooms as a mum with my children! Great excursion destinations all around. Delicious refreshments in the youth hostel. Nice people, both the staff and other guests to meet and talk to... and great, the special offers that we have taken part in so far: several riding holidays with a night watchman tour and a visit to the indoor swimming pool in Celle, mother-daughter wellness weekend! Please keep up the good work! You are a great enrichment!!!“

„It must have been around 2008 when I was at the youth hostel in Gersfeld Röhn to learn paragliding. While I was learning the theory, a fire alarm went off (luckily it was only a drill) and the corridors were full of smoke and it was very exciting when the fire brigade rescued some children from the first floor. This experience is still a favourite story. =D“

„We stayed at the youth hostel in Aachen for a week. Unfortunately we didn't get the great family room with a double bed. But when we wanted to ask a family if we could have a look at it, we realised that it was a family we already knew and had met in 2 other youth hostels over the years. We then had a lovely week together and have since become friends and see each other several times a year in youth hostels or at home.“
