STEM-supporting school trips in the youth hostels in the Rhineland

The abbreviation STEM stands for the school subjects of maths, computer science, natural sciences (biology, chemistry, physics) and technology. Sounds rather theoretical and boring at first and is not exactly one of the most popular subjects for many people. Every now and then you might ask yourself the question: „What does this have to do with me and my life?“. A good question! After all, it's easy to lose sight of the big picture in the „theoretical dust“ and „jumble of numbers“. But one thing is clear: STEM is everywhere!

Many everyday questions - such as: How does a refrigerator work? Why do aeroplanes fly? Or why doesn't a crane fall over? - can be answered with the help of STEM subjects. It is therefore worth supplementing theory with practical examples, asking questions and finding explanations. Experimenting, observing or trying things out yourself is not only fun, but the results are easier to remember and understand.

However, you can't carry out experiments in every lesson. So why not use the class trip to actively deepen STEM knowledge and learn new things? The class trip programmes of the youth hostels in the Rhineland, which carry the „STEM-supporting“ seal, guide pupils to understand and create connections. The programmes complement lessons without copying or replacing them. Practical experiences and examples support the theoretical teaching knowledge. The positive memories help to ensure that what has been learnt has a lasting effect in the classroom.

Class trip programmes that carry the „MINT-supporting“ seal are characterised by the following quality criteria:

• The class trip complements the lessons and teaches STEM-relevant knowledge in an experience-orientated way.
• The acquisition of at least one competence in the STEM subjects is supported and consolidated through reflection.
• The respective lecturers are familiar with the curriculum of the subject and have overarching knowledge of the respective topic.
• The programme is varied and promotes team cohesion and exercise.
