In the middle of the Bergisches Land, on the site of the former Leppe residual waste landfill, there is now a unique adventure centre that conveys knowledge about the environment, sustainability and nature in an exciting and interactive way. The :metabolon offers families, school classes and groups in particular numerous opportunities to actively engage with topics such as the circular economy, energy production and ecological resource conservation. But that's not all: thanks to the longest double slide in Germany, a mountain bike park, a cross golf course and a low ropes course, :metabolon is also a huge leisure park. And best of all: the visit is completely free and the entire :metabolon site is barrier-free.

What is the :metabolon?

The :metabolon project, whose name is made up of the terms „metabolism“ and „economy“, was created as part of Regionale 2010, a structural development programme of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Even back then, the Leppe waste disposal centre was considered one of the most modern waste disposal sites in Europe. However, the perception at local level was rather negative: The population feared the pollution and environmentally harmful effects associated with the disposal activities. By restructuring and recultivating the landscape, it was possible to change the perception of the waste disposal site. Today, an exhibition and various stations on the site vividly illustrate how waste products can be converted into valuable resources and present innovative technologies that make the use of resources more efficient and environmentally friendly. The :metabolon offers an exciting mix of interactive stations, experience areas and an impressive panoramic view.
