Big stage for the handball talents of tomorrow

Three days of top-class sport, international flair and an atmosphere like the big ones: From 22 to 24 August 2025, eight U17 handball teams from Germany and Europe met at the German International Youth Championships (GIYC) in Düsseldorf. All teams were accommodated in the Düsseldorf Youth Hostel, which offered ideal conditions for players and coaches with short distances, plenty of space and sporty catering. In the end, the Rhein-Neckar Löwen won the tournament, triumphing 30:22 against Füchse Berlin in the final at the Rather Waldstadion. Third place went to the Swedish team Önnereds HK.

An established highlight in European handball

„The GIYC have firmly established themselves in the preparation and competition calendar of the top teams and enjoy a very high reputation,“ explains Nic Kirschbaum from D.SPORTS, who organise the tournament in cooperation with the German Handball Federation. The players born in 2009 and 2010 gain valuable international experience here - and get a taste of the atmosphere of professional handball for the first time.

A strong sign of its increased importance: FC Barcelona was the first real heavyweight on the European handball scene to take part in 2025. „That shows how important the GIYC has become internationally,“ says Kirschbaum.

More than just handball: platform for young talent in all areas

The tournament not only provides a stage for the athletes. Young referees from the region and commentators from the German Sport University Cologne were also able to gain valuable practical experience. They commentated on all matches live on Twitch, conducted interviews and worked behind the scenes of the production. „It is precisely this holistic concept that makes the GIYC so special,“ emphasises Kirschbaum.

The decision to hold the tournament on a weekend for the first time also paid off: Even more spectators watched the matches on site, while the livestreams on Sprungwurf.tv reached fans across Europe via Twitch.

Accommodation with team spirit: Düsseldorf Youth Hostel

A special feature of the tournament is that all teams are accommodated together in the Düsseldorf Youth Hostel. Short distances, plenty of space and modern conference rooms for team meetings offer ideal conditions. „Everyone under one roof - that's what makes the tournament special,“ says Kirschbaum.

The advantages are obvious: organising shuttles and catering is much easier, but above all it promotes exchange across club and national borders. In the evenings, the youngsters play table tennis or table football together while the coaches discuss handball tactics. The result is a unique sense of togetherness.

Kirschbaum describes the atmosphere in the youth hostel as „super familiar, but at the same time quiet - because the days are very intense“. The catering is also tailored to the needs of the young competitive athletes: high in carbohydrates and protein, with vegetarian and vegan options and flexible meal times.

The German International Youth Championships have long been more than just a youth tournament: they are a showcase for the future of handball - in sporting, organisational and human terms. Not only did exciting matches take place in Düsseldorf, but also encounters that foster friendships and networks across national borders.
