Wuppertal is famous for its suspension railway. And not just because the elephant girl Tuffi jumped out of it into the Wupper in 1950. The suspension railway can look back on over 120 years of history and is therefore affectionately known as the „old lady“. So if you are travelling to Wuppertal, a ride on the suspension railway is a must. But Wuppertal also has a lot more to offer. Families in particular have the choice of many different leisure activities in the capital of the Bergisches Land region. You can find affordable accommodation in the Wuppertal Youth Hostel in the Barmen district. The house, which served as accommodation for refugees from Ukraine for two years, is now ready for guests again after renovation and offers various specials for families that make their stay particularly affordable. At the 3 and 5 days family time out you can look forward to a short holiday at a fixed family price of 229 euros or 459 euros. By the way, until 9 June 2024 you can still take part in our Take part in the competition and win a short family break including 2 nights with breakfast for a maximum of 2 adults and 3 children up to the age of 17 at Wuppertal Youth Hostel.

The suspension railway takes you to many of the city's sightseeing highlights, first and foremost the Suspended bodrom, which only opened in autumn 2023. It is a mixture of historical exhibition, VR experience and light show all about the Wuppertal suspension railway. On the other side of the city, but also easily accessible by suspension railway, is the Green Zoo Wuppertal. The terrain is „mountainous“ with ups and downs. With beautiful meadows, large ponds and an old stock of trees, it lives up to its name. It is one of the most scenic parks of its kind and is the only zoo to be included in the European Garden Network. Wuppertal Zoo is home to more than 3,300 animals from all continents, including elephants, big cats, monkeys and penguins. In addition to the suspension railway, Wuppertal offers another way to explore the city: The bicycle. Of course, you can simply follow the course of the Wupper and enjoy a great mix of picturesque landscapes, old industrial plants and varied neighbourhoods. Or you can cycle along one of two former railway lines, the Northern railway line and the Samba Terrace. Rest areas, playgrounds and viewpoints await you along the way, offering you a marvellous view over Wuppertal.

At Wuppertal Youth Hostel, families can stay overnight at particularly favourable rates thanks to various offers. In addition to the 3 days family time out, the 5 days family time out and the Special offer „3 for 2“ the hotel also offers a savings package that includes two nights' accommodation and breakfast as well as a combined ticket for a ride on the suspension railway and admission to the Wuppertal Green Zoo. „On Tuffi's tracks through Wuppertal“ can be booked during the NRW summer holidays and on all weekends in 2024.

Family and leisure groups of 10 people or more receive a 15% discount on the regular prices for accommodation and meals during the NRW holidays for a minimum stay of 4 nights.

Wuppertal hat viel mehr zu bieten als seine berühmte Schwebebahn, z.B. einen der schönsten Zoos Deutschlands, den Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden und eine lebendige Street Art-Szene. Changing exhibitions and special guided tours and workshops for children ensure that a visit is fun for the whole family. Even more culture, but also great nature experiences are offered by the Sculpture Park Waldfrieden.
