New hostel manager at Kleve Youth Hostel

On 1 July 2024, Jenny Akkerman officially took over the management of the Kleve Youth Hostel has taken over. However, the 36-year-old is not an unfamiliar face: Jenny Akkerman has been working at the youth hostel since summer 2021 - first as a receptionist, then as assistant to the hostel manager and finally as acting manager.

Career aspiration fulfilled!

Jenny Akkerman has wanted to work in a youth hostel since she was a child. Her family - 80-100 people - has been meeting regularly at a youth hostel for around 30 years for family celebrations with football, parties and overnight stays. „As a child, I always looked forward to this event,“ says Jenny Akkerman. That was when the foundations for her professional career were laid.

Back home via Düsseldorf

Jenny Akkerman, who grew up in Kleve, initially trained as a hotel manager after leaving school - a first step in the right direction. Her career with the DJH Rhineland regional association then began in 2010. She started as a receptionist at Düsseldorf Youth Hostel, where she was promoted to reception manager after about a year. „I really enjoyed my time in this beautiful city,“ says Jenny Akkerman. „But my husband and I always knew that we wanted to go back home.“ In 2017, the time had come: she moved to Kleve Youth Hostel, where she became assistant hostel manager in 2021 and finally hostel manager herself.

Firmly rooted in Kleve

Jenny Akkerman now has three children with her husband and feels at home both privately and professionally in the Lower Rhine region. In her free time, she trains a children's dance group and has also started dancing again herself after a 10-year break. But the hostel manager doesn't just have a lot on her plate in her private life. She has big plans for Kleve Youth Hostel to make it even more attractive. Most recently, the climbing and hanging frame in the outdoor area was extended.
