A house manager talks about his day-to-day work

Markus Fischer is 36 years old and lives in Duisburg. After training as a process mechanic, he completed his community service at Duisburg-Landschaftspark Youth Hostel in 2009/2010. Originally, Markus Fischer wanted to study after his community service. However, as he enjoyed the job so much, he stayed on - initially on a 450 euro basis, then part-time and finally full-time.

When the completely new Duisburg-Sportpark youth hostel opened in 2013, he moved to the new location, initially as reception manager and conference coordinator, later advancing to deputy hostel manager. In 2020, in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, he applied for the management of Essen Youth Hostel after Mr and Mrs Ladwig retired - with success. You can find out what challenges he had to face and what he likes about his job in the interview on our Career page.
