Insider tip in January: ice skating on two levels
On Saturday, in the centre of Essen, in the middle of Kennedyplatz, the „Essen's winter dream“ has opened. This includes the largest ice rink in NRW, which extends over two levels - unique in Germany, according to the organisers.
Ice skating on 2,000 square metres
Until 10 March 2024, visitors can pirouette and put their skating skills to the test in Essen's city centre. It probably won't be too crowded, as the ice rink, which extends over two levels, is a full 2,000 square metres in size. The two levels are connected by a long ramp. However, the „Essen Winter Dream“ doesn't just offer the opportunity to skate. There is also curling, a café and a children's carousel.
Opening hours:
Sunday - Thursday, 11.00 - 21.00 hrs
Friday + Saturday, 11.00 - 23.00 hrs

Essen has a lot more to offer in winter: The Folkwang Museum, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zeche Zollverein and Villa Hügel are popular leisure tips, especially in the cold season. If you have children, the Phänomania Erfahrungsfeld in Essen-Schonnebeck, a children's museum where you can experiment for yourself, is also a great place to visit. You will find the perfect place to stay overnight in the Werden district of Essen. Above the Baldeneysee lake, idyllically situated in the countryside and close to the city centre, is the Essen Youth Hostel.
