Rureifel-Runde - On two wheels through the heart of the national park

Last time, we introduced you to a relaxed cycle tour around Xanten - ideal for families with small children or anyone who wants to cycle at a leisurely pace. Today it's getting more sporty: at around 62 kilometres and a few metres in altitude, the circular tour through the Rureifel requires a lot more stamina - but rewards you with impressive nature, sweeping views and exciting stops along the way.

Starting point directly at Simmerath Rurberg Youth Hostel

If you stay overnight at Simmerath Rurberg Youth Hostel, you can set off cycling almost straight away: The circular tour starts just three kilometres away in Rurberg. From there, it first leads along the Rursee lake and through the Eifel National Park, and later along the Urftsee lake - always with marvellous views of the water and the wooded hilly landscape.

Culture, nature and storytelling stations along the way

Special highlights along the route include the National Park Gate and the medieval Hengebach Castle in Heimbach. The Art Nouveau power station can also be visited as part of public guided tours. Gemünd, which was badly affected by the floods in 2021, shows how sustainable reconstruction can succeed in a small town.

Between Rurberg and Heimbach, cyclists also encounter so-called narrative figures - they tell entertaining stories about the changes in the region at several rest stops. Ideal for anyone who wants to listen to stories as well as pedalling along the way.

Refreshment and relaxation included

A dip in the water is particularly worthwhile on warm days: swimming breaks are possible at the Eiserbachsee lake near Rurberg, in Woffelsbach, Eschauel and in the outdoor pools in Heimbach and Gemünd. If you don't want to travel the whole route, you can also sit back and relax in between: The Rursee boat trip offers several stops between Rurberg, Woffelsbach, Eschauel and Schwammenauel - ideal for shortening the tour or simply enjoying it from the water.

Conclusion:

A varied circular tour with sporting challenges, many experiences along the way - and a perfect combination of being active and relaxing.
