News from Neuss Youth Hostel

There is a lot to discover in Neuss. And even better: many leisure activities in the Roman city are even free or cost very little money. How good that Neuss Youth Hostel now also offers the 3- and 5-day family break and the family special „3 for 2“ in the NRW holidays offers. Until 28 April 2024, you can still take part in our Competition and win a short family break including 2 nights with breakfast for a maximum of 2 adults and 3 children up to the age of 17 at Neuss Youth Hostel.

From farm to superbugs

Is it just a stone's throw from Neuss to the NRW state capital Düsseldorf? That's right! But did you know that Neuss itself has a lot to offer, especially for families? One highlight is definitely the Neuss family farm, where you can experience chickens, goats, sheep, horses and pigs up close. Petting, touching and smelling are expressly encouraged here. Close to the farm in Selikumer Park there is a deer enclosure for fallow deer, where you can observe and feed the friendly animals. Both offers are completely free of charge.

You can also visit the Feld-Haus free of charge. This is a branch of the Clemens Sels Museum in Neuss, where popular prints are exhibited. The underlying collection was built up by Dr Irmgard Feldhaus, the former director of the Clemens Sels Museum for many years, and handed over to the city of Neuss in 2006. From 28 April, the Feld-Haus will be showing an exhibition that will be of particular interest to children and comic lovers: „Amazing Superbugs - The big crawl in comics“ shows around 80 exhibits relating to superheroes and villains in the comic cosmos - including Spider-Man, Ant-Man and Black Widow - that were inspired by insects.

In the Clemens Sels Museum An exhibition on the siege of the town of Neuss by Charles the Bold will be on display in the town hall itself from 14 April. „Neuss 1474“ shows how the approximately 4,000 inhabitants of the town lived in 1474 during one of the largest sieges of the Middle Ages. Admission to the museum is free on the first Sunday of every month. On all other days, adults pay 5.00 euros, while children and young adults up to the age of 21 visit the museum free of charge.

Further leisure tips for families

There is much more to discover in and around Neuss - after all, Neuss is one of the oldest cities in Germany. You can trace the city's long and eventful history at many places in the city area, e.g. at the Quirinus Minster, the Romaneum and the Roman military camp in Neuss-Gnadental. Also worth a visit are

  • The Museum Insel HombroichThe museum is embedded in a renaturalised park and floodplain landscape on the River Erft. Under the motto „Art parallel to nature“, you can discover ten walk-in sculptures, some of which are used as exhibition spaces, on the 21-hectare landscape conservation area. Just a stone's throw away is the Hombroich rocket station, a museum site on a former NATO missile site.
  • The Neuss Alpine Park: You can go skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing in the indoor ski centre. Outside, an alpine golf course and a fun football pitch await you.
  • Dyck CastleOne of the most culturally and historically significant moated castles in the Rhineland enchants visitors with its castle park and English landscape garden with its old trees. The popular „Schlossfrühling“, a spring and Easter market, takes place there from 31 March to 7 April.
  • The Zons customs fortressZons am Rhein is a particularly well-preserved fortification dating back to the 14th century. The small town with city walls and a 600-year-old windmill invites you on a journey into the past. You will find cosy restaurants and cafés in the narrow alleyways - ideal for relaxing after a long tour of discovery.
